Centre for Environment Education (CEE), Headquarters in Ahmedabad, is an internationally acclaimed institution in the field of EE and ESD. It has considerable experience and expertise in addressing its primary mandate of improving public awareness and understanding of the environment with a view to promoting the conservation and sustainable use of nature and natural resources. Over the past twenty years, CEE has been working in the field of environmental education. It has developed innovative programmes, educational material, undertaken demonstration projects and built capacities in the field of environmental education. Recognising the complexity and vastness of work in the field of ESD, CEE works in partnership with a range of organizations at national, regional and international level, which is given tribute by its affiliation to the centres in Australia and Sri Lanka. The strategy is to collaborate with others to build synergies, achieve a multiplier effect, enhance effectiveness and widen the range of programmes.
CEE's unique position at the national level and in the Asia Pacific region through its network partners helps leverage experience, expertise and resources for ESD programmes in the region. The Centre is a member of the Asia Pacific Regional Committee for Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD). It is the Nodal Agency for the DESD under the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India, which is the National Focal Point for DESD in India. The Director of CEE is a member of the National Committee for DESD implementation in India.
The Centre has been committed to ensuring that due recognition is given to the role of education in the promotion of sustainable development since its inception. CEE organized the first international conference of DESD, 'Education for a Sustainable Future' in January 2005 which was held at Ahmedabad, India as the first civil society
initiative to launch the Decade. CEE also organized TUNZA, the second International Youth Conference in October 2005 in Bangalore, India. This conference, held as part of UNEP's TUNZA initiatives for youth, addressed key MDG concerns in the context of DESD.
As the world grapples with the challenge of understanding the concept of sustainability and integrating it into policy and practice, numerous dilemmas have presented themselves: there are many unresolved issues, and concerns that are yet to be addressed.
